Wrong Way by Alex Aguayo (Incl. Silicodisco & Azaria Remixes) - PNRS003
Following two significant breakout releases last year, Penrose bite down hard into 2021 with another cosmic trip.
Destination Mexico: a vital home of dark, sleazy, sexy slo-mo sounds. Also home to Alex Aguayo, an artist with major stripes on the label likes of Nein, Paradiso, Dear Deer and so many more. Now making his debut on David Ponziano’s label, Alex brings his contemporary disco twist across three originals with ‘Wrong Way’.
Mutating his blend of electro, Italo, synthwave, trance and techno into a much more focused, tense fusion than his previous releases, over three tracks Alex fires us away to some incendiary highs. ‘Wrong Way’ takes the lead with its gradual sense of elevation.
Poppy in its shimmering hook but much sterner in its bottom end; over seven minutes we’re taken to some beautiful places. It’s followed by ‘Wet Floor’. A slippery arpeggiated composition that builds and builds and builds, it’s an instant smack to the senses. And just when you think it’s given you everything, it builds even more before landing us back into reality to strike dramatic gold in the tightly woven strands of ‘Who Are You’.
Meanwhile on the remix frontier: fellow Nein affiliate Azaria scrubs up ‘Wet Floor’ with even more emotional electro surges while previous Penrose artist Silicodisco brings the EP to an epic close as he flips ‘Wrong Way’ into a beautiful rainbow rave finale...
